Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our kiln shelves, firing specs, shipping, and custom orders — answered by our experts.

Temperature Ratings

Our kiln shelves are engineered to withstand extreme firing conditions, with maximum temperatures varying by material type:

  • Cordierite shelves — rated up to 1320 °C (2408 °F), ideal for most earthenware, stoneware, and mid-fire glazes.
  • High-alumina shelves — rated up to 1430 °C (2606 °F), suitable for high-fire porcelain and stoneware.
  • Silicon carbide (SiC) shelves — rated up to 1650 °C (3002 °F), designed for industrial and specialty high-temperature applications.

Always ensure your shelf grade matches your kiln's firing cone range. If you're unsure which grade is right for you, our team can help you select the optimal shelf for your specific firing conditions.

Durability & Lifespan

With proper care, Abref-KilnShelf products are built for long-term performance. Typical lifespans depend on usage and maintenance:

  • Studio / hobby use — expect 5 to 10+ years of reliable service with regular kiln wash application and careful loading.
  • Production / commercial use — typically 2 to 5 years, depending on firing frequency, cone temperature, and load weight.
  • Industrial SiC shelves — renowned for exceptional thermal shock resistance, often lasting 10+ years in continuous kiln environments.

The biggest factors affecting shelf longevity are: consistent application of kiln wash, avoiding rapid temperature changes, proper stacking to prevent warping, and cleaning off glaze drips promptly. Our maintenance guides cover all of these in detail.

  • Custom shapes — round, oval, hexagonal, perforated, or any profile your kiln design demands.
  • Material choice — specify cordierite, high-alumina, mullite, or silicon carbide depending on your temperature and load requirements.
  • Minimum order quantities apply for custom items — typically a minimum of 50 units, though this may vary by complexity and material. Contact us for a precise MOQ for your project.

To start a custom order, simply fill in our Request a Quote form with your dimensions, material preference, and quantity. Our engineering team will review your requirements and get back to you with a detailed proposal.
